Following its app’s relaunch in the Indian market with Reliance Retail, fast fashion business Shein saw its mobile shopping app enter the top 10 apps on the Apple App Store and experienced over 10,000 downloads within just several days of going live.
As Shein returns to India after close to half a decade of being banned in the country due to perceived national security risks, the brand’s new app launched with operations managed by Reliance Retail Ventures Limited’s fully owned subsidiary Nextgen Fast Fashion. The mobile shopping app launched with deliveries covering the New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru metro areas, BBC reported. Shein plans to subsequently expand deliveries to pin codes across the country, according to a public app notification.
In order for Shein to receive the necessary approvals to retail in the Indian market again, Reliance Retail has assured the government that it will have no connection to the previously banned Shein app and website and that all user data will be held locally in India and will be secure. The brand will also work with a network of Indian manufacturers, focusing on micro, small, and medium enterprises, to produce its clothing in order to boost the domestic apparel industry and create employment opportunities.
“The licence agreement covered the protection that ownership and control of the platform will always remain with RRVL through its wholly owned subsidiary,” communicated the government’s minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal to the Lok Sabha, Indian Retailer Bureau reported. “As per the agreement, at all times, the platform will be hosted on infrastructure in India and all platform data will remain in India with Shein having no access to, or rights over, such data.”
