The close relationship between the New York-based photographer and the Galician fashion brand continues to flourish. Following an extensive retrospective exhibition dedicated to Steven Meisel‘s work, curated and hosted by Inditex president Marta Ortega in A Coruña earlier this year, Zara and Meisel reaffirm their creative alliance by launching a joint fashion collection.
Titled ‘Steven Meisel New York’, this collection serves as a heartfelt ode to the photographer’s beloved city. Naturally, Meisel, the iconic photographer, has enlisted a star-studded cast to feature in this black-and-white campaign. The campaign showcases 26 portraits of celebrities who share a profound connection with Steven Meisel. These luminaries include his muse, Linda Evangelista, as well as supermodels from both the past and the present like Amber Valletta, Liya Kebede, Irina Shayk, Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Penelope Tree, Eva Herzigova, Alton Mason, Ash Stymest, and Scott Barnhill.
Furthermore, Steven Meisel has called upon his most trusted collaborators to craft the visual identity of this collection, professionals who are also familiar faces within the Arteixo-based fashion label (based in A Coruña, Spain). Karl Templer has curated the styling, renowned celebrity makeup artist Pat McGrath has designed the beauty looks, and iconic hairstylist Guido Palau has overseen the hair styling.
With the intent to capture the style and personality of the famed photographer, this limited edition collection, available for both men and women, delves into Meisel’s wardrobe, reflecting his unique obsessions and extravagance. The collection features premium pieces while maintaining an accessible price range, including jeans, a hoodie, a parka, a fur-lined hat, a bandana, and lace-up black boots.
The influence of Steven Meisel’s body of work is apparent in this collection, with references to the 1960s, a recurring theme in his portfolio, inspiring items like a faux fur coat, a leather shirt, and a corseted closure trouser. Music also plays a prominent role in the collection, infusing a touch of grunge into a plaid shirt and paying homage to one of the photographer’s iconic 1990s fashion editorials with an oversized denim jacket adorned with a second-skin layer of sequins. Lastly, the spider-shaped designs featured on the T-shirts are a nod to Meisel’s early career as a fashion illustrator.
This collection will be available for purchase starting from Monday, September 18, through Zara’s official website and select physical stores. In an exclusive debut, two temporary spaces will be set up to promote physical retail during international fashion weeks. Until September 13, Steven Meisel’s creations will be available at 33 Howard Street in New York’s Soho neighborhood. Then, from September 15 to 17, the limited edition collection will make its way to Dover Street Market in London.
To coincide with its launch in the Big Apple, Marta Ortega hosted an exclusive soirée at the Soho pop-up store. The event was attended by luminaries from the fashion industry, including Linda Evangelista, Karen Elson, Saskia de Brauw, Adwoa Aboah, Candice Swanepoel, Coco Rocha, Liya Kebede, Joan Smalls, Sasha Pivovarova, Selena Forrest, Kaia Gerber, Precious Lee, Paloma Elsesser, Amelia Gray, Alton Mason, Daphne Groeneveld, Kit Butler, Julia Nobis, Cara Taylor, Daria Strokous, Eve Jobs, Anna Sui, and Michele Hicks.
