Mumbai-based clothing brand Polite Society has launched its first ever fully upcycled clothing line. The gender neutral line is named ‘Poli-morph’, will be evergreen, and is designed to contribute to a circular economy.
“India produces over 7,800 kilotons of textile waste every year, so we definitely do not suffer from a lack of materials,” said Polite Society’s founder and creative director Surmai Jain in a press release. “As a homegrown label, I’ve always tried to design clothes that are size, and gender inclusive. While the brand has clearly managed to engage with customers from the lens of high social awareness, I still wanted to venture into slow fashion and grow PS as a zero-waste brand. Hence, we launched this initiative.”
The line launched with six limited edition garments which were created from fabric waste from the Polite Society warehouse. The brand has reimagined some of its signature silhouettes such as a streetwear style jacket and corset by rendering them in upcycled textiles with textured details and patchworking.
“Engendering fabric manipulation techniques like patchwork, and developing designs from in-house textile waste as well as deadstock fabric- the team is rigorously striving towards creating a circular powerhouse of masterful designs,” announced Polite Society in a press release.
The ongoing collection is designed to contribute to the brand reaching its green goals and becoming more environmentally conscious. To develop the line, Polite Society will continue to recycle, resize, and repurpose its warehouse byproducts.
