The Ministry of Textiles plans to roll out its India Size project “soon”. The government aims to begin standardising clothing sizes in the country with measurements designed specifically to suit Indian body types to better cater to consumers and boost the textiles industry.

“We are hoping… that will happen very soon,” the Ministry of Textiles’ textiles secretary Rachna Shah told the Press Trust of India in New Delhi. Where the majority of clothing in India currently follows a US or UK sizing system, the plan is to gradually have the dominant sizing system be an Indian one.

Other countries’ sizing systems have been found to be not sufficiently compatible with Indian heights and sizes which can lead to an unsatisfactory shopping experience for many consumers. The government has already carried out a large scale research and development project to discern how an India sizing chart could work.

The plan is part of the Union Government’s wider plan to expand and ameliorate India’s domestic textiles market to reach a value of between $40 billion and $50 billion in the coming five years, India Retailing reported. The market is currently valued at around $22 billion.

As well as focusing on sizing in the domestic clothing market, the government is also promoting the domestic technical textiles sector as an avenue for growth. “Our exports of technical textiles is presently at $2.5 billion, our objective is to enhance it to $10 billion during this [five year] period,” said Shah.
