Legendary Malayalam playback singer, P Jayachandran passes away at the age of 80. The veteran singer had been an integral part of Malayalam cinema and its music over the last decades. The notification of his death was shared by industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai on X (formerly Twitter).
According to various reports including Times of India, the singer had been battling cancer for quite some time now. As the popular singer was undergoing treatments at a private hospital in Thrissur, he succumbed to his death, leaving behind a legacy of immortal tracks.
P Jayachandran was born on March 3 1944 in Ravipuram, Kochi, Kerala. The singer was the third son of Ravivarma Kochanian Thamburan of Tripunithura Kovilakam, a member of the Cochin Royal family and Subhadrakunjamma of the Paliyam Palace.
After his family had moved from Kochi to Irinjalakuda in Thrissur during his early years, the singer did his schooling and completed his education in the district. Along with being a graduate of Zoology, the singer also received many prizes for playing the mridangam and light music in his early years.
In his illustrious career over the years, P Jayachandran had crooned for over 16000 songs across several languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada. The singer had even turned into an actor in a couple of films as well.
The singer who had started off his career in Malayalam had worked with several musicians over the years including G Devarajan, MS Baburaj, V Dakshinamoorthy, K Raghavan, MS Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, Koti, Shyam, MM Keeravani, Vidyasagar, AR Rahman, and many more.
The singer was also popularly known by his nickname, “Bhava Gayakan” meaning expressive singer. In his decades-long career, the singer has been the recipient of several awards including the National Award for Best Playback Singer Male in the year 1986 for the movie Sree Narayana Guru.
The singer has also won several Kerala State Film Awards and also won two Tamil Nadu state film awards.
