Former GJEPC chairman Kirtilal Doshi passes away at 101

Former Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council chairman Kirtilal K. Doshi passed away on November 20 at the age of 101 years old.

Doshi served as chairman of the GJEPC from 1970 to 1971 and was instrumental in the establishment of the Gemological Institute of India, the first gemological institute in the country, the GJEPC reported on its website. Doshi also played a key role in creating industry bodies including the Precious Stone Importers Association, Diamond Exporters Association Limited, and Bharat Diamond Bourse.
 
During his lifetime, Doshi was given a number of awards for his work in the jewellery industry. These include the GJEPC’s ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ which was bestowed upon him in 2012. Doshi led his family business Shrenuj & Co after joining his father’s business in 1942. 

“He was also a pioneer in introducing modern technology and equipment in the diamond cutting and polishing sector, as well as promoting ethical and responsible business practices,” announced the GJEPC. 
 
The GJEPC remembers Doshi as, “a visionary leader of the Indian gem and jewellery industry,” and reported that he passed away peacefully and is survived by two sons, a daughter and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
