Apparel brands Yash Gada, Manisha & Rashmi, Ishita Sikka, and Priyal & Kanwari
made their runway debuts on day one of Lakmé Fashion Week x Fashion Design Council of India in Mumbai at the Inter National Institute of Fashion Design Launchpad showcase.
On March 13, four up-and-coming apparel brands launched their latest collections on the runway, each presenting a unique inspiration. Manisha & Rashmi kicked off the show with a collection titled ‘Checkmate’ which was inspired by the recent Netflix launch and vintage cartoon ‘The Archies’. A gaggle of models walked the ramp to an upbeat soundtrack wearing retro style mini dresses made from red, patchwork style fabrics. Whimsical accessories such as berets and platform shoes added to the vintage feel of the womenswear collection and the youthful presentation brought the 1960s to the 2020s.
Yash Gada’s collection ‘Dhagedaar Denim’ was also inspired by a decade past, this time the 1970s. By using denim textiles to create statement looks with movement and textile, Yash Gada showed the material in a new light.
Ishita Sikka’s collection was inspired by psychedelic art and how it influenced ideas of self. The conceptual collection used fabric to explore philosophies with a striking effect.
Suits were the order of the day for Priyal & Kanwari. The brand’s collection ‘The New Corner’ looked to the 1980s for inspiration and tailoring to create looks suitable for the office and an afterparty.
Palak Uke’s collection ‘Japanese Vintage’ mixed street wear with East Asian aesthetics with a colour palette of white, grey, and red. Boxy separates featured Japanese painterly details and evolution played a key role in the collection.
Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI runs from March 13 to 17 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai and showcases collections from designers from across India. The fashion week features both physical runway shows and digital showcases with a number of design competitions and fashion seminars.
