Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has launched a limited edition of silk shirts featuring prints from The Sabyasachi Art Foundation. The men’s and women’s line is designed to mix traditional painting techniques with fashion and support artists.

The limited edition line is named ‘Wild Wonderful World’ and was created by turning specially hand painted images into digital prints, the brand announced on Facebook. Tigers, monkeys, peacocks, toucans, and owls join an array of butterflies and flowers to create a very Indian and luxe take on the Hawaiian shirt with long sleeve options also available.

“Featuring prints created by The Sabyasachi Art Foundation,” announced Sabayasachi on Facebook, sharing images of the new line. “The prints are digital renderings of original hand painted artwork using earth colours and the ancient tempera painting technique. The artwork is inspired by the wild plenitude of tropical flora and fauna, led by the house insignia, the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger.”

The Sabyasachi Art Foundation was launched in 2014 by Sabyasachi Mukherjee and aims to make art and culture financially sustainable, according to the designer’s website. The foundation offers underprivileged fine artists from Bengal a space in which to create art and where they are provided with the tools they need including a studio and a mentorship programme.

“The Sabyasachi Art Foundation is an homage to my mother,” said Mukherjee about his foundation. “My mother was a wonderfully talented and creative artist, who gave up what could have been a career as an artist to become a teacher and take care of her children and the home. I felt a lot of guilt when I began to realise that my mother, this indomitably strong and courageous woman, who helped shape my own creativity had to sacrifice her talent because of our lack of privilege and financial constraints. And so, The Sabyasachi Art Foundation was born.”
