Fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has joined forces with cosmetics brand Estée Lauder to launch a lipstick line. The collaborative collection will go live in India on March 4 and mixes Sabyasachi’s opulent take on Indian heritage with Estée Lauder’s classic appeal.
“When I visited the Estée Lauder archives, I saw such beautiful products- almost objects of art,” announced Mukherjee on his eponymous brand’s Facebook page. “I related to that as a jeweller and designer. I felt a strange kinship with Mrs Lauder, her vision was spectacular but essential. I wanted to bring that back and distil it into this collection. This collection celebrates not just the colours but also the cultural exuberance and sensorial joys of India. A true collaboration between New York and Calcutta.”
Lipstick shades in the collection include ‘Apricot Silk’, ‘Rouge Bengal’, and ‘Devi Pink’ among others, Vogue India reported. The lipstick cases are plated with 24 karat gold accents and the tops feature Sabyasachi’s signature Bengal tiger. The collection will retail on Estée Lauder’s India e-commerce store and at select retail counters.
“The limited collection also bears in mind sustainability,” Mukherjee told Vogue India. “It’s not just limited to packaging and production. We need to push consumers to practice consumption mindfully to close the loop. You know how the saying goes–buy less but buy better. So that was the real premise of this collaboration. It did take four years to just create these 10 formulas, but I think I’m happy with the outcome of it.”
