On August 1, Rajesh Pratap Singh, presented a dark bohemian take on traditional wear at India Couture Week. ‘Desert Rose’ was a tactile, eclectic men’s and women’s couture collection which presented a new take on what couture means.
The runway was filled with candles and the show commenced with traditional singing and models walking through the dark in LED headgear. What followed was a mix of luxurious overcoats and gowns mixed with subversive takes on tradition including a black PVC-look lehenga.
Hoods and face coverings added an air of mystery for both men and women and chain mesh face covers brought to mind warriors of old, as did chainmail jewellery. Accessories were layered for a maximalist aesthetic and models wore their hair in a mix of traditional braids and covered with sheer textiles.
This season, the eponymous designer introduced special metallic yarns into his collection for the first time, Rajesh Pratap Singh announced on Instagram. The designer’s mood board for the collection included photos of ancient royalty, Marie Antoinette, and ethnic dress from both North and South India. Platform sandals and hooded capes further added to the drama of the affair.
