Designer Preeti Jhawar has partnered with craft organisation Banjara Kasuti to commission Lambani embroidery work for its womenswear designs while contributing to uplifting rural women.
“I like how colourful, skilful and neat their work is,” Preeti Jhawar told Vogue India about the partnership. “Plus, it feels good to support organisations uplifting rural women.”
Banjara Kasuti currently works with 69 women from four villages in the state of Karnataka. The organisation plans to expand its workforce to employ 100 women by the end of the year in order to enable more women to forge a sustainable livelihood.
Banjara Kasuti is also expanding its retail operations after beginning to sell outfits last year, Vogue India reported. The organisation took part in the most recent textiles exhibition organised by non-profit Dastkar and aims to continue to expand the product categories it works on.
Preeti Jhawar launched her eponymous brand in 2001 and the label has a base in both Mumbai and Kolkata, according to its website. The brand describes its designs as “global bohemian fusion wear” and aims to mix comfort with luxury. Inspirations include folklore and royalty and the brand also retails from its direct to customer e-commerce store.
