E-commerce platform Meesho has onboarded 25,000 new sellers who are not registered for goods and service tax. The business began the practice in October this year after the GST Council gave the industry the go-ahead.
“Committed to our goal of digitising 10 million sellers by 2027, Meesho stands firm in driving innovation and embracing the government’s historic decision to eliminate mandatory GST registration for small businesses selling online,” said Meesho’s CXO of business Megha Agarwal, ET Retail reported.
The move to allow non-GST registered businesses to sell online will greatly increase the pool of businesses across India which can be introduced to e-commerce. The GST Council, which meets to monitor and evaluate the GST and its adoption, decided to open up e-commerce to businesses with a turnover of Rs 40 lakh to help boost India’s online economy.
Non-GST sellers currently contribute approximately 1.3 lakh products to Meesho’s selection, according to the business. Out of this figure, over 80% of the products are found only on Meesho, ET Bureau reported. Meesho is continuing to witness strong adoption by non-GST sellers and around 40% of its non-GST seller registrations took place in November and hailed from over 20 Indian states, suggesting that the number of non-GST sellers retailing on Meesho will continue to rise.
