The Khadi Mahotsav 2025 kicked off in Lucknow to celebrate Indian handloom. Inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the event is designed to serve as a platform for local artists.
“This event is serving as a platform for all the artists doing local products,” said Yogi Adityanath, Asian News International reported. “We should accept good things from wherever we get them.”
The handloom event runs for a week at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow. Along with celebrating the legacy of handloom in India, the event featured individual booths for local fashion and accessories designers who use the textile in their work.
“The festival will provide a platform to local craftsmen, artists, weavers and spinning entrepreneurs, as well as a national platform to ODOP [one district one product] products,” wrote Adityanath on Facebook. “Best wishes for the success of this event!”
Adityanath tried out a spinning wheel at the event and met with local craftspeople. The minister also took the occasion to position Khadi as a symbol of India’s self respect, referencing Mahatma Gandhi in his speech, the Press Trust of India reported. Adityanath stated that Uttar Pradesh has successfully implemented the central government’s ‘vocal for local’ initiative by engaging handicrafts and boosting the local economy.
