Womenswear brand Gaurang celebrated the colour pink with a vibrant traditional wear collection on day two of Lakmé Fashion Week x Fashion Design Council of India. March 14 was the event’s Sustainable Fashion Day and Gaurang used a selection of handloom textiles to create sarees that heralded the arrival of Spring.

Gaurang’s spring/ festive collection ‘गुलाल’ (Gulaal) was inspired by the promise of the Spring season of Phagun with sarees featuring intricate borders, metallic details, and traditional motifs. The collection was almost entirely pink and its sarees ranged from delicate pastel shades of the hue to rich magentas.

Two Kathakali dancers graced the runway in traditional attire and face makeup and moved around piles of pink powder in traditional dishes as incense smoke evoked the sense of a festival. This was mirrored in the bright accents on Gaurang’s pink sarees with hints of green and yellow creating the impression of Spring flowers.

The collection featured textiles including fine cotton, silk matka, and other natural silks, Lakmé Fashion Week announced on Facebook. The collection highlighted handloom Khadi which has been championed in recent years as a sustainable and heritage textile of India.

Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI runs in Mumbai from March 13 to 17 at the metro’s Jio World Convention Centre. The fashion week brings together designers from across India and features both physical runway shows and digital showcases as well as a number of design competitions and fashion seminars.
