The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council hosted government officials at SEEPZ Mumbai’s Bharat Ratnam Mega Common Facility Centre to discuss how to increase the industry’s global competitiveness. The GJEPC also attended a Board of Trade meet in Mumbai to advocate for the jewellery industry.
“By working collaboratively with the government, we can create a more sustainable and prosperous future for the gems and jewellery industry,” said GJEPC chairman Vipul Shah following the Bharat Diamond Bourse meeting, ET Bureau reported.
The GJEPC met with commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal, director general of foreign trade Santosh Sarangi, and additional secretary at the Ministry of Commerce Rajesh Agrawal at SEEPZ, Mumbai on September 13, the GJEPC reported on its website. The meeting highlighted the need to create additional employment opportunities at the SEEPZ and in the wider gem and jewellery industry as well as a dedicated task force for the sector.
“As the industry faces challenges, now is the time for the government to step in and provide support,” said Barthwal. “A task force in line with the task force created for the textile sector can play a crucial role in identifying and addressing these challenges, ensuring a more favourable environment for businesses and boosting India’s exports.”
The Board of Trade meeting, which took place at the Westin Hotel in Mumbai, was chaired by minister or commerce and industry Piyush Goyal and attended by Vipul Shah who represented the jewellery industry as a member of the Board of Trade. The meeting discussed ways to ameliorate trade and contribute to India’s rising global status as an exporter, the GJEPC reported on its website.
