The Indian government-backed online platform Open Network for Digital Commerce saw its cumulative orders pass the 7.1 million mark in February 2024. ONDC reached the milestone after launching just over a year ago in January 2023.
ONDC now counts over 370,000 sellers and service providers on its platform and is operating in 588 countable cities representing 70% of cities in India, ET Tech reported. These “countable cities” refer to cities which totalled over 100 orders per month in the past three months. In total, ONDC has fulfilled orders in over 800 Indian cities.
In January this year, ONDC reached a total of 6.75 million cumulative orders and order growth is expected to continue as ONDC onboards more sellers and increases consumer awareness. The government is promoting ONDC as a means to democratise e-commerce in India and ensure that small business’ products are as easily visible to shoppers as those by large businesses.
The government has been onboarding retail businesses onto the platform from sectors ranging from fashion to food and has also been conducting onboarding activities with farmers’ producer associations and other rural organisations to connect with a variety of enterprises. ONDC sellers Ninjacart, Mystore, Shiprocket held a seller onboarding programme in Chhattisgarh for a wide range of agricultural societies.
