Bangladesh state minister for labour Monnujan Sufian today announced Tk 12,500 as the new minimum monthly wage for garment workers.
The Minimum Wage Board’s announcement came after garment factory owners submitted a fresh proposal, revising the wage upwards to Tk 12,500 from Tk 10,400 earlier, according to Bangladeshi media reports.
The board was formed in April this year.
Workers demanded Tk 23,000 as the minimum monthly wage from Tk 8,000 now.
The new minimum wage, 56.25 per cent higher than the existing one, will be effective from December 1.
