Uttar Pradesh government to purchase land of shuttered spinning mills for industrial development

The Uttar Pradesh government has earmarked 450 acres of land from six defunct textile mills for industrial development as part of its plan to create a 150,000-acre land bank by 2027 and boost employment in the northern state. The Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (Upsida) will oversee the acquisition of these land parcels to facilitate new industrial projects.

The six shuttered mills, operated by the UP Cooperative Spinning Mills Federation, are located in Sitapur, Fatehpur, Prayagraj, Ghazipur, Farrukhabad, and Bulandshahr, Apparel Resources reported. These mills have remained non-operational for over two decades. Uttar Pradesh minister for industrial development Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi stated that repurposing the land would generate new investment opportunities and employment in the state.

Additional closed spinning and yarn mills, covering over 1,000 acres across multiple districts, may also be reallocated for industrial use. Potential sites for redevelopment include Meerut, Hardoi, Jhansi, Banda, Ballia, Mau, Rae Bareli, Barabanki, Amroha, Bareilly, Bijnor, and Sant Kabir Nagar, among other districts.

The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority, and the Noida and Greater Noida industrial development authorities. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to expedite land acquisition and allocation to support both small and medium-sized enterprises and large-scale industries, reinforcing the state’s industrial expansion strategy.
