If some of these rules could get you dismissed from a flight. For example, trying to get on a Delta, United, or American Airlines flight without your shoes on could get you turned away. If you decide to wear a bikini top home from the beach or a t-shirt with offensive language on it, you will likely be asked to either change or stay off of the flight. While most people realize this is a rule, there are always those who try their best to get around it.
This is where it gets good! Some anecdotal evidence has suggested that being dressed nicely may earn you a free upgrade when you travel by plane. George Hobica is the founder of a travel advice website known as Airfare Watchdog. He told the New York Times that even though most people don’t think that looks have anything to do with an upgrade, it can and does still happen.
There are certain factors that an airline will consider if they have an upgrade available, such as customer loyalty. However, many say that a well-dressed flyer could be offered an upgrade if no one else on the flight qualifies.
Hobica spoke of the time a friend, who worked at the gate in Lufthansa, confirmed that there is some truth to this story. She revealed that she would upgrade a person based on how pregnant they were at the time, how attractive she thought they were, or if they were dressed nicely.
Of course, representatives of the major airlines won’t admit to this. It probably wouldn’t be a great idea to ask them directly, either! However, it wouldn’t hurt to ask politely for an upgrade the next time you are flying economy. You can dress comfortably for a flight while still looking your best, and the extra effort may get you a seat up in the very front. Who wouldn’t want the luxury of added leg room?
