Uniqlo launches its first Community Skill Centre Project in India

Uniqlo, in collaboration with Plan International, has launched its first skill centre project in India, the Job Oriented Vocational Training Centre, aimed at providing practical training to underprivileged youth. This initiative marks Uniqlo’s first ongoing social contribution activity in the country and is designed to equip young people with essential skills for employment.

Funded by Uniqlo’s parent company Fast Retailing, the three-year project has received a donation of 120 million Japanese yen (approximately Rs 7 crore), Uniqlo announced in a press release. The centre is located in Dwarka and offers training in fields such as general duty assistance, retail operations, sewing, digital and financial literacy, and workplace communication. The initiative prioritises job seekers aged 18 to 29 from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those who have dropped out of school or have limited employment opportunities.

“Inspired by our LifeWear philosophy of making everyone’s life better, we hope this skill centre project will have a life-changing, positive impact for thousands of young Indian people,” said Uniqlo India’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer Kenji Inoue in a press release. “It is fundamental for Uniqlo that, in every country and region that we operate, we always contribute to society.”

Uniqlo is also exploring internship opportunities at its stores and facilities for select participants, further supporting their career development. The project, which runs until December 2027, aims to train 2,700 youths and foster long-term economic empowerment.

“With the launch of the new Saksham Centre, we will be creating opportunities for young women and men to gain market-oriented skills, secure sustainable livelihoods, and become active contributors to nation-building,” said Plan International ‘s India Chapter executive director Mohammed Asif.
