As global demand for natural diamonds wanes but jewellery demand picks up, some of Surat’s diamond cutting and polishing units have pivoted to jewellery manufacturing to ride out current businesses challenges by diversifying their operations.

“The units have gradually started doing job work in jewellery manufacturing,” said the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council’s chairman Vipul Shah, ETBureau reported. “Jewellery demand is increasing both in India and abroad, therefore, they are trying to leverage this opportunity. In this way, the units in Surat are trying to engage workers.”

Both gold and studded jewellery has seen demand pickup in India and abroad, ET Retail reported. However, cut and polished diamond demand is not expected to increase significantly in the near future as global uncertainty continues.

From April to November 2024, India’s cut and polished diamond exports decreased by approximately 19% but plain gold jewellery exports rose by 2.48% and studded jewellery exports increased by 14.4% during the same time period, according to the GJEPC. Around 10% of Surat’s diamond cutting and polishing units have diversified into jewellery making, with a focus on studded jewellery.

To respond to the increasing demand for jewellery making skills, the GJEPC launched a jewellery making course tailored to industry workers around half a year ago. The traders’ body has also engaged in dialogue with the government to explore ways to promote the natural diamond industry, asking for financial support to help increase demand, it reported on its website.
