The government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce announced that it has onboarded approximately five lakh sellers. The platform seeks to deepen its collaboration with startups for online growth after registering 7.22 million transactions in the month of April.
“ONDC was set up to democratise and make digital commerce accessible to smaller players,” said the Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’s secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, ET Tech reported. “It has started getting traction in the last two years.”
Of the five lakh sellers onboarded onto ONDC, 70% are small and medium sized businesses, ET Bureau reported. This is in line with ONDC’s aim to uplift small businesses and get more visibility for their products online.
“The idea is to get [a] wider choice and value to the customers and also access to all kinds of sellers and not only the big ones,” said Singh. “The intent is noble, let us see how it works and to what extent we can actually crack some of the issues you raised in terms of market concentration.”
ONDC recently held a ‘Startup Mahotsav’ event to bring together businesses and address current topics and issues. Businesses including Zerodha and Livspace came together to sign a Letter of Intent to show the willingness of startups to work together with ONDC and to show its potential.
