The North East Institute of Fashion Technology brought Indian fashion and culture to the Turkish city of Istanbul and held the 19th global edition of its Celebrating North East India Festival to promote tourism to the region as well as its handicrafts and textiles.
On September 6, the Metropolitan Municipality venue in Istanbul welcomed fashion designers, models, and performers from North East India, the Daily Sabah reported. Designed to showcase the region’s diverse heritage to an international audience, the Celebrating North East India Festival was organised through a collaboration with the the Consulate General of India in Istanbul with support from the Indian Ministry of Textiles and a number of state governments in North East India.
“A sincere thanks to honourable chief minister, Mizoram and honourable minister of art and culture, government of Mizoram for the support towards the 19th edition of mega event Celebrating North East India Festival organised by NEIFT in association with The Consulate General of India, Istanbul, Turkiye,” announced NEIFT on Facebook.
A group of local models walked the runway as part of the event including Derya Eksioglu, Gamze Balim, Hande Taskin, Burclu Altunsaray, and Deniz Eser among others, NEIFT announced on Facebook. Music and dance performances also accompanied the event’s runway shows.
This was the first time the cultural event was held in Istanbul. The event has held previous editions in global cities including Washington D.C. in the US and Milan in Italy.
