The National Institute of Fashion Technology’s Chennai institute held a runway show to promote waste management on July 13. The event was also designed to celebrate the city’s conservancy workers and showcase student designs.
“We wanted to honour conservancy workers who often brave harsh conditions to keep our city clean,” said NIFT’s director Anitha Mabel Manohar, TNN reported. “Through this event, we wanted to educate people about sustainable initiatives and the benefits of recycling cloth waste.”
The fashion show was titled ‘Shine Beyond Streets’ and NIFT Chennai students presented their own take on utilitarian and work fashion with high-vis saree belts and embellished tools. Notable looks included capes, helmets, and masks mixed with workwear. Conservancy workers also walked the ramp in an array of ethnic and occasion wear at the venue Express Avenue Mall.
NIFT Chennai worked with private conservancy agency Urbaser Sumeet on the runway show. The agency took the occasion to urge people to either donate their unwanted clothing or dispose of it separately to general waste. “This small act can make a significant impact on our waste management efforts,” said Urbaser Sumeet’s CEO Mahmood Sait, the Times of India reported.
