E-commerce platform Meesho has moved to enable the sale of more unbranded products on its marketplace in response to rising rural demand. The business also aims to increase its ties with micro, small, and medium enterprises, including in its logistics network.
“About 70% of non GST [Goods and Service Tax] sellers who are selling products through our platform are from Bengal,” said Meesho’s general manager of fulfilment and experience Sourabh Pandey, ET Bureau reported. “About 54% of e-shoppers using our platform are from rural areas of the state, where the demand for unbranded products is more than Tier 1 cities.”
Over the past year, Meesho has reported a 30% increase in orders made on its e-commerce platform by shoppers in Bengal. The business has also witnessed an 80% rise in app downloads in the state.
“About 52% of sellers on our platform are also manufacturers,” said Pandey. “We are using third party logistics in Bengal and have 600 logistics partners who are small business entrepreneurs. We are trying to create a platform where more logistics partners can join.”
Meesho retails a wide range of products including fashion, accessories, beauty goods, homeware, and other lifestyle products with a focus on value retail. The business is gearing up to launch an initial public offering and concluded a $550 million funding round at the end of January 2025.
