Meesho close to doubled its seller onboarding total in the January to June period this year, according to the business’ latest Smart Shopper Report, ET Retail reported. Meesho’s shopping app was downloaded more than 20 crore times during the six months as the business focuses on both seller and customer acquisition.

The business, which focuses on value retail, has been focusing on non-metro shoppers to drive growth. Penetrating deeper into Tier 4 locations, Meesho reported that shoppers from these cities and beyond have emerged as its most frequent customers in categories including women’s apparel, baby care, and footwear.

More than 80% of Meesho’s annual transacting customers come from Tier 2 cities and more rural locations. This is in line with the increasing adoption of the internet and increased confidence in online shopping in these areas as well as rising levels of disposable income amongst certain demographic groups.

Non-metro shoppers also place importance on being able to shop online in their local language, according to Meesho. During the first six months of the year, voice search functions and the adoption of vernacular languages increased by 162% year-on-year on the platform.
