Man shot dead near England cricket team’s Trinidad hotel | World News

Must read

A man has been shot dead near the England cricket team’s Trinidad hotel.

England and the West Indies are midway through a T20 series, and the final two matches are being played in the Trinidad and Tobago capital, Port of Spain, this week.

Both teams are staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wrightson Road, where a man was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police on the island, which has the sixth-highest crime rate in the world, have launched an investigation

Official UK government advice currently warns travellers there is “a high level of violent crime” and “risk of armed robbery” in Trinidad.

“Gang-related attacks and shootings are increasing around the city centre of Port of Spain,” it adds.

The PA news agency understands that prior to the shooting, England’s players had already been forbidden from leaving the hotel unless it was for cricketing purposes or a prearranged golf trip.

The incident has not jeopardised Tuesday’s match, which is England’s first in Trinidad in 14 years, and a team spokesperson said there will be no change to security arrangements.

England are 2-1 down in the T20 series and hope to overturn the score in the final two matches.

England all-rounder Liam Livingstone said earlier this week: “Obviously we want to win this series, but there’s a World Cup coming up.

“There’s a lot of focus on that and hopefully these next two games can give us a lot of confidence.”
