‘Major’ police operation in German city of Mannheim following reports of knife attack | World News

Several people have been injured in a knife attack on a far-right demonstration in the German city of Mannheim, with police launching a “major operation”.

Police shot at the attacker. They said the incident happened in the southwestern city’s market square shortly after 11.30am local time.

“A firearm was used against the attacker,” Mannheim police said in a statement.

They said they could not immediately give any information on the severity of the injuries, including to the knifeman.

German newspaper Bild said a video had emerged showing a knifeman attacking people before being shot by an armed officer.

“There is currently a major police operation on the market square in Mannheim,” local police said in a statement.

“A rescue helicopter is also in use. No further information can be provided at this time.”
