Kamala Harris now has no opponents for Democratic presidential nomination | US News

Must read

US vice president Kamala Harris is now the only candidate seeking the presidential nomination, after a deadline passed with no one else qualifying.

Some 99% of delegates signed Ms Harris’s nominating petition, according to the Democratic National Committee.

It cements her position as the Democratic frontrunner for the 5 November election after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race.

“Our party has met this unprecedented moment with a transparent, democratic, and orderly process to unite behind a nominee with a proven record who will lead us in the fight ahead,” DNC chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement.

It comes as her campaign announced Ms Harris will hold her first rally with her new vice presidential nominee on Tuesday 6 August in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She will embark on a four-day battleground tour including Michigan and Arizona.

The location of the first rally suggests Pennsylvania’s governor, Josh Shapiro, may be at the top of her list of running mates.

Other candidates include Kentucky’s governor Andy Beshear, US Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Kentucky’s Governor Tim Walz and the secretary of transportation Pete Buttigieg.
