Lab grown diamond jewellery brand Jewelbox has praised the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council’s decision to implement new norms for the classification of diamonds and aims to promote transparency through its own business operations.
“At Jewelbox, we fully support the GJEPC’s decision to bring clarity to diamond classifications in India, aligning with global standards,” said the business in a press release. “Transparency and accurate labelling are essential to maintaining consumer trust, and lab-grown diamonds (LGDs) with clear classifications empower consumers to make conscious, informed choices.”
Jewelbox, which is based in New Delhi, is keen to dispel the myth that lab-grown diamonds are inferior to natural diamonds. The business asserts that lab grown diamonds uphold the same brilliance and durability as natural diamonds.
“Historically, the word ‘synthetic’ has been associated with products like Cubic Zirconia and American Diamonds- diamond simulants or lookalikes,” said Jewelbox. “These are entirely different in terms of chemical and physical characteristics. Unlike simulants, LGDs are exact substitutes for natural diamonds. Mislabeling all non-natural diamond products under the ‘synthetic’ category misleads consumers, conflating high-quality LGDs with lower-grade alternatives.”
The business asserts that naming diamonds as ‘synthetic’ could lead to misconceptions amongst consumers. This could dilute confidence in the industry and thus highlighting ‘lab-grown’ over ‘synthetic’ will help India’s lab-grown diamond industry to expand on a global level, according to Jewelbox.
