The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has signed a memorandum of understanding with the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited to set up an Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery in Guwahati. Signed on September 23, the MoU is designed to empower jewellery artisans and entrepreneurs in North East India.
The partnership will provide specialised training and business development support to gem and jewellery artisans across the North East, in line with the government’s PM Vishwakarma initiative, the GJEPC announced on its website. The IIGJ’s CEO Debasish Biswas spoke at the MoU exchange ceremony and expressed his optimism that the partnership with the NEHHDC will benefit the region’s jewellery industry and train a new generation of innovative jewellers. The MoU ceremony was also attended by the GJEPC’s COO Siddharth Himmatsinghka and regional director for the Eastern region Kaushik Ghosh among others.
The NEHHDC also recently took part in the State Handloom Expo in Sikkim, Sikkim Sarokar announced on Facebook. The craft and textile event featured 66 stalls showcasing locally made products from Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as stalls featuring local weavers and self-help groups from Sikkim.
As part of its endeavours to enhance business opportunities, the NEHHDC partnered with the Government E-Marketplace and signed an MoU to promote the business-to-government domain to Assam’s local artisans and weavers, the Government E-Marketplace announced on Facebook. The NEHHDC was set up under the aegis of the government’s Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and works to promote local indigenous crafts.
