French luxury department store Galeries Lafayette Hausmann in Paris has announced that it is the first department store in Europe to integrate the Unified Payments Interface system. The digital payment feature was developed by the National payments Corporation of India and is designed to offer convenience and security to Indian shoppers.
“We are delighted to be the first department store in Europe to offer the UPI payment solution at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann,” said Galeries Lafayette Paris Hausmann’s director Vincent Sénéquat in a press release. “By introducing UPI, we facilitate seamless and secure transactions for our Indian customers and strengthen cultural and economic ties between France and India. As the number of visitors from India is growing, we are proud to offer this innovative payment option, ensuring a convenient and memorable shopping experience.”
UPI enables shoppers to make interbank money transfers via mobile applications and link multiple bank accounts to one app. Its unique virtual identifiers also provide security when making digital payments.
The launch is part of the business’ move to modernise its payment processes and was celebrated with a cocktail event attended by guests including Galeries Lafayette’s CEO Nicolas Houzé and Ambassador of India Jawad Ashraf. The event was also designed to strengthen ties between the French department store and the Indian diplomatic community ahead of Galeries Lafayette’s India launch.
“With the opening of our first Indian store in Mumbai in 2025, followed by New Delhi, this initiative becomes even more significant, symbolising our commitment to reinforcing the ties between our two countries,” said Sénéquat.
