Four people die during migrant crossing attempt in English Channel | UK News

Must read

Four people have died while attempting to cross the English Channel to the UK from France.

The French coastguard confirmed the deaths after a boat capsized and said 63 migrants had been rescued during a crossing attempt overnight.

The deaths were first reported by French newspaper La Voix Du Nord and broadcaster BFM TV, citing local authorities.

Large numbers of people have continued to cross the Channel this year.

Last month, almost 900 people made the journey in a single day.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, mentioned the deaths on social media and said: “The new government had better start moving fast.”

Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, has launched a Border Security Command.

It is designed to both strengthen border security and “smash the criminal smuggling gangs making millions out of small boat crossings”, the government website says.

But in what appears to be a setback, Neil Basu, a former national head of counterterrorism, has turned down the chance to head the new initiative, according to The Times newspaper.
