Walmart-owned e-commerce giant Flipkart has crossed the milestone of deploying over 10,000 electric vehicles in its India delivery network. The business’ strategic adoption of electronic vehicles is designed to lower costs, boost operational efficiencies, and increase sustainability.
“With the deployment of over 10,000 electric vehicles, what we have achieved is more than a logistical shift,” said Flipkart Group’s senior vice president and group head of supply chain Hemant Badri, the Press Trust of India reported. “By pairing our expanded electric vehicle fleet with critical investments in charging infrastructure, we are not only driving operational excellence but also setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the industry at large.”
Flipkart has rolled out a phased integration of electric vehicles into its delivery fleet over the past few years, ET Retail reported. The electric vehicles have reduced Flipkart’s logistics costs per order at its delivery hub level and ameliorated its delivery speed by 20% when compared to traditional delivery vehicles.
The business has a target of achieving a fully electric last mile delivery fleet by 2030 in line with the EV100 initiative by the Climate Group. Flipkart’s electric vehicles are currently most present in metro and Tier 1 locations such as New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The business is also investing in charging infrastructure to support its transition.
