Ravi Kant Prakash works as United Colors of Benetton India’s lead product designer for menswear: bottoms and shared his action points to make denim production more sustainable, the event organisers announced in a press release. The designer stressed the importance of training workers to reduce errors and making use of new technologies to reduce the need for excessive denim washing, which wastes water and thus harms the environment.

“The use of advanced technologies such as laser finishing, ozone treatments, and innovative dyeing techniques can significantly reduce the need for excessive washing,” announced the designer in a press release. “These technologies achieve the desired aesthetics without the environmental impact associated with traditional methods… By using high-quality materials and construction techniques, the lifespan of denim garments can be prolonged, reducing the frequency of washing and extending the product’s lifecycle.”

Ravi Kant Prakash noted that the focus on sustainability should not end at the point of sale. Printing clear product care instructions to enable consumers to get the maximum number of wears out of their jeans and promoting upcycling practices to keep the products in use also keeps them away from the landfill and in circulation.

The sixth edition of the Denim and Jeans India Conclave took place at The Lalit Ashok and brought together industry stakeholders, leaders, and innovators to discuss how to increase sustainable practices in the denim industry. The event was also designed to demonstrate the industry’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
