The minister for commerce and industries Piyush Goyal has vowed to protect micro, small, and medium enterprises in the diamond industry following a recent global meeting with a delegation from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre in Belgium.
“Deliberated on the progress of the request made to the [EU] Trade Commissioner regarding an extension of the deadline for technology-based certification, highlighting its crucial role in supporting Indian small businesses and protecting consumer interests in the diamond sector,” wrote Piyush Goyal on X (formerly Twitter). “Conveyed to them India’s commitment to a fair, equitable, and commercially meaningful Free Trade Agreement. Underlined that India offers a great investment opportunity and called upon captains of industry to explore its fullest potential.”
During Goyal’s travels to Brussels in Belgium, he also held meetings with senior executives from a number of Europe based businesses and heads of business associations in the region, the Press Trust of India reported. The minister aims to help to foster an environment where Indian jewellery exports to Europe and beyond can grow.
The Antwerp World Diamond Centre represents more than 1,475 businesses based in the diamond district of Antwerp, Belgium, according to Mining Indaba. The centre’s diamond office is the only customs office in Belgium where diamonds can and must be declared for import and export outside the EU, according to the centre’s website.
Goyal also met with a number of Indian students during his trip to Brussels, the minister announced on January 21. “It was wonderful to meet Indian students and our diaspora during my visit and emphasise the importance of their role in strengthening India’s global influence,” wrote Goyal on Facebook.
