Casa Lopez was founded in Paris in 1988 as an oriental carpet specialist. It was acquired 10 years ago by Pierre Sauvage, and has since transformed itself into an art-of-living and lifestyle brand. With a range including decorative objects and tableware, Casa Lopez has gradually added scented candles and soaps, and even dropped a collaboration with French shirt specialist Figaret.

Sauvage, a communication and PR expert who was in charge for 12 years of Parisian agency Douzal, bought Casa Lopez in 2014 from its founders Véronique Lopez and Bernard Magniant.

“Casa Lopez is a brand I know well. In 1999, I worked for its owners on its PR and communication strategy. I was keen to acquire it for a long time. When I finally bought [Casa Lopez] in 2014, it was selling carpets only, but I already wanted to turn it into a more comprehensive art-of-living brand,” said Sauvage.

Casa Lopez is still an independent business, and currently operates four stores in Paris. It is also distributed via retailers elsewhere in France and in the U.S., which sell its tableware, scented candles, soaps and home decoration fabrics. In September, Casa Lopez will open a larger store in Paris’s wealthy 16th arrondissement.

In April, Casa Lopez launched a line of soaps inspired by its scented candles. The soaps are available in various fragrances, developed by fragrance producer IFF, and in the colours ivory, black, red and green (each 160 gr soap bar is priced €28). The red soap, called Kyphi, contains notes of peppermint, cardamom, myrrh and juniper berry, and was created by master perfumer Dominique Ropion, the nose behind perfumes like La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme and La nuit de l’homme by Yves Saint Laurent.

“Our soaps have enabled us to enter several perfumeries and concept stores. This allows us to broaden our connections and build a new community around the brand,” said Sauvage.

He indicated that he would like to add to the brand’s personal care and beauty line if, and only if, the Casa Lopez brand will be able to contribute something “different and unique.”

Casa Lopez already has a line of pareos and beach-style tote bags, and recently extended its fashion presence via a collaboration with Figaret, developing a range of cotton, silk and linen shirts decorated with prints selected by Sauvage himself.
