Bucket list: have breakfast with giraffes at Giraffe Manor

Must read

A combination of luxury and adventure, The Giraffe Manor is an iconic place in Nairobi where millions of visitors come each year to enjoy safaris. Giraffe Manor provides unique and one of its kind experience where you can have breakfast with actual giraffes, and we are not kidding. This exotic hotel is more than 12 acres long and it is situated in the Langata Suburb forest.

The History

The Giraffe Manor is one of the earliest properties that were built for tourists to witness the beautiful wildlife of Kenya. The Safari Collection owns the property of Giraffe Manor currently, but it was built way back in 1932 by Sir David Duncan. It was made like a hunting lodge first but then in 1970’s, a couple named Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville adopted a Rothschild’s giraffe, Daisy. Later, this place was home to three wild bull giraffes. And then with time, many more giraffes were adopted, and this small hunting lodge became a giraffe safari.

The Hotel

The Giraffe Manor was turned into a fine luxury hotel in 1983 with the help of Rick Anderson and his wife. They converted The Giraffe Manor into a private and luxurious hotel where people can see or feed giraffes from anywhere inside the place. In 2009, Mike and Tanya Carr-Hartley purchased this place and it is now a part of The Safari Collection Group. Guests can feed giraffes from their front doors, large windows near the breakfast table and even from their bedroom windows. There are a total of 12 rooms in this luxurious hotel and many celebrities have stayed there in these years.

The Giraffes

Since the very first giraffes were adopted, there are more than 10 giraffes now on the property of The Giraffe manor. They are very friendly with humans and they poke their heads inside from different windows where you can feed them from. The Rothchild’s Giraffes is a subspecies of giraffes and they are on the verge of extinction. This type of giraffe is quite different from others as they are larger and taller than any other types with well-defined and dark patches on their skin. You will also notice that this species has 5 different antlers on its head which are known as Ossicones.

Nairobi is more than 5500 feet above sea level, so it stays chilly at nights and warm in the days. The Giraffe Manor only closes in May for maintenance. The two rainy seasons here are March to May, and October to December.

From suites to superior rooms, guests have 12 different room options according to different locations inside the property. There are different types of rooms in the main house and rooms adjacent to the Garden Manor available.

So, next time plan your vacation to The Giraffe Manor and create lifetime memories.
