When applied directly to skin, argan oil may support repair skin and reduce signs of ageing, as per a research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in 2017. The antioxidants in argan oil, particularly Vitamin E, help neutralise free radicals that cause premature ageing. “Regularly using argan oil can help in reducing the appearance of fine lines, and wrinkles, and promote glowing skin,” says the expert.

3. Skin healing and repair

Applying argan oil can reduce inflammation caused by injuries or skin infections, as per a research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in 2017. Argan oil has anti-inflammatory and healing properties, which can soothe irritated skin, and reduce redness. It may also accelerate the healing of minor cuts, burns, and scars.

4. May improve skin elasticity

Argan oil has fatty acids, and carotenoids that can protect the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, according to a research published in Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2013. Argan oil forms a protective barrier on the skin, shielding it from harmful UV rays, and pollution. Its antioxidant content can also help in repairing damage caused by these factors.

Can you leave argan oil on your face overnight?

“Yes, this oil is quite gentle. So, it can be left on the face overnight,” says the expert. In fact, using it as an overnight treatment will allow your skin to fully absorb its nutrients, leading to deeper hydration and more effective results. Applying it before bed ensures that the skin repairs and rejuvenates while you sleep, leaving you with a radiant complexion in the morning.

How to use argan oil for skin?

Argan oil can be used daily, both morning and night. “People with dry or mature skin, can apply it twice daily, while those with oily or combination skin can use it just once a day,” says the expert. The best time to apply argan oil is after cleansing and toning when the skin is slightly damp, as this helps the oil penetrate deeper into the skin.

Here are some of the ways to use argan oil:

1. As a moisturiser

After cleansing, put a few drops of argan oil in your palms and gently massage it into your face and neck. It can be used alone or mixed with a moisturiser of your choice for an added hydration boost.

2. As a serum

Argan oil can be used as a serum before applying your regular moisturiser. You can apply a small amount of argan oil to your face while focusing on areas like dry patches.

3. In face masks

“Mix argan oil with ingredients like honey, yogurt, or oatmeal to create a nourishing DIY face mask,” suggests Dr Vikram. Apply this mixture to your face, let it stay there for at least 15 minutes then rinse off with lukewarm water.

4. As a lip balm

You can use this oil on lips too. “Argan oil is effective in hydrating and protecting dry, chapped lips,” says the expert. Apply a drop directly to your lips as needed throughout the day.

5. In makeup removal

Use argan oil as a natural makeup remover by applying it to a cotton pad and gently wiping away the colour cosmetics from your face. It can remove even waterproof makeup while nourishing your skin.

Argan oil is safe for most people, but it is always wise to do a patch test before applying it to your face, especially if you have sensitive skin. In rare cases, some people may have mild skin irritation or allergic reactions to this oil. If you have nut allergies, consult a dermatologist before using argan oil, as it is derived from the nut of the argan tree.
