“India is one of the markets where we want to focus and want to invest, because of the growing middle class here, which is one of the biggest in the world,” India general manager of AMIT GPS and Navigation Deepak Raina told the Press Trust of India. AMIT International Group is the official distributor for Garmin smartwatches in India.

The Indian smartwatch market could be facing a decline after swift growth in recent years, Indian Retailer Bureau reported. However, Garmin attributes this to a lack of performance in product by other labels and is confident that its continually expanding offering will capture consumer sentiment.

“This degrowth sentiment is coming from watches, which claim to be smartwatches and not being able to fulfil the expectations and is spoiling the mood of the customer,” said Raina. “We take this as an opportunity.”

Smartwatches increased significantly in popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic when health became a major purchase driver for many Indians. Shoppers in rural areas have also increasingly embraced smartwatches as internet usage has increased and a wider variety of products have become available in the market.

Along with smartwatches, Garmin manufactures handheld gadgets and marine devices for boats and ships. The business also expects to see growth in these segments.
