A passenger died on a flight from Bulgaria to the UK, forcing the plane to be diverted, it has been reported.

The aircraft was on its way from Burgas to Liverpool when an emergency was declared about two hours into the flight.

The plane, a 737-800 operated by Jet2, was diverted to Germany and landed safely after a rapid descent.

Flight tracking websites show the plane made an unscheduled landing in Cologne at about 2.30pm on 16 September before it continued to Liverpool at about 10.20pm later that day.

The identity of the man who died is not known. Aviation website Airlive reported that the pilots made the request to divert after the male passenger was found to be suffering from a cardiac arrest.

He was treated by members of the crew and two medically trained passengers, Airlive said, but did not survive.
