At least 51 people have died after a truck rammed into market traders and several other vehicles in western Kenya.

The accident on Friday evening occurred at a location known for vehicle crashes near the Rift Valley town of Londiani, which is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital, Nairobi.

Police at the scene counted 51 bodies but more people were believed to be trapped in the wreckage.

32 people were injured and taken to hospital, according to the Kenya Red Cross Society.

The charity has called on Kenyans to donate blood and said heavy rainfall had “interrupted” rescue efforts.

Kenya’s transport minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, visited the scene on Saturday morning.

He said markets would be moved away from highways to prevent further such incidents in future.

President William Ruto tweeted a message of condolence to families mourning their loved ones.

The president described the incident as “depressing” and urged motorists to be “extra cautious”.

The truck veered off the major highway and hit several vehicles before colliding with pedestrians and and traders, according to witnesses quoted in local media.

Witnesses have also shared photos showing the wreckage of vehicles mangled beyond recognition.

Local police said on Friday night that rescue efforts would continue well into the night.

The Kenya Red Cross Society said they had set up stations at hospitals where where people can report loved ones as missing.

They also said they are providing psychological support to those affected by the incident.
