Indian government reinforces commitment to Global South at G77 summit in Cuba

After its hosting of the G20 summit, the Indian government participated in the G7 Plus China summit in Cuba which took place over the weekend. The Union government highlighted its commitment to the Global South at the event which includes economic development through industry.

“G77 should focus on its core mandate and not get distracted by bilateral political conflicts,” said MEA secretary (west) Sanjay Verma at the meeting, TNN reported. “We take great pride in our presidency, as Africa- represented by the African Union- for the very first time now, deservedly sits at the high table of a global body, like the G20. By delivering on his promise to Africa, PM Modi has confirmed the representation of the developing world, including the G77, is now at its highest in the G20.”
 
Verma took part in the meeting as Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar could not travel to Havana, Cuba due to an Indian special Parliamentary session beginning on Monday. Verma represented the Indian government when he highlighted India’s G20 initiative to mainstream Global South issues. 

Through its presidency of the G20 this year, India has focused on sustainability and artisan crafts, among other topics. The government recently held a tree planting ceremony at the Bharat Mandapam, G20 India announced on Facebook, and has also held jewellery artisan and weaving demonstrations at numerous events.
