GJEPC facilitates India’s first jewellery exports through courier mode from Mumbai

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has facilitated the first jewellery exports through courier mode from Mumbai. The milestone is part of the GJEPC’s plan to promote and simplify India’s international jewellery trade. 

“The swift implementation of exports via courier mode within one year of its announcement underscores the government’s commitment to this vital sector,” said the GJEPC’s chairman Vipul Shah, the traders’ body announced on its website. “I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Mumbai Customs for taking this historic step at a crucial juncture, considering the industry’s current challenges. Enabling exports through courier mode will not only open doors to new markets but also significantly expand the value-added exports from the sector by reaching directly to retail and end consumers abroad.”
 
The first four Mumbai shipments using the courier mode were made for Titan Company’s jewellery brand Caratlane using the airline Air India. The jewellery was sent to the US on September 6 and was valued at over $1,000.

“The utilisation of courier mode for exports has the potential to reduce costs by as much as 70% compared to cargo mode, thereby facilitating the entry of numerous jewellery businesses across India into the realm of e-commerce,” said Shah. Mumbai’s close links with jewellery hubs in Gujarat and beyond will enable many gem and jewellery manufacturers to benefit from the service, according to the GJEPC.
