A 34-year-old British woman has been stabbed to death in a hotel corridor in Portugal.
Police said a man, 34, had been arrested on suspicion of murder following the alleged attack in Albufeira, in the Algarve, on Tuesday evening.
Officers said a young boy had also been injured during the incident and taken to hospital.
A family court in Portugal is due to decide whether the child can stay with relatives or will be taken into care for the time being.
An investigation has been launched by detectives, police added.
A spokesperson for the foreign office said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Albufeira is one of Portugal’s most popular destinations for summer tourists, with large numbers of visitors drawn to its sandy beaches every year.
