Balance the pH levels of your skin with these 8 tips

Must read

Are you struggling with unpredictable breakouts, dull complexion, or irritated skin? If so, you might be overlooking a crucial factor in your skincare routine—your skin’s pH levels. When the skin’s pH level is disrupted, it can lead to various issues like dryness, breakouts, sensitivity, and even premature ageing. On the other hand, maintaining a balanced pH is essential for achieving a healthy, radiant complexion. But what exactly is pH, and how do you balance your skin’s pH levels? Fortunately, there are several effective ways to restore and maintain the optimal pH level of our skin.

In order to learn how to balance skin pH levels naturally, Health Shots got in touch with beauty industry veteran Dr Blossom Kochhar, Chairperson of Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies.

What is the skin’s pH level?

The pH of your skin indicates how acidic or alkaline your skin is. Dr Kochhar says, “The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and ranges from 0 to 14. However, the skin’s natural pH balance is slightly acidic, typically ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 on the pH scale.” If it is more than 7, then your skin is alkaline, and if it is less than 7, then your skin is acidic. The skin’s slightly acidic pH is important for several reasons such as protection against several skin conditions, and keeping it moisturised and nourished.

How to balance skin’s pH levels?

Maintaining optimal pH levels for your skin offers a range of benefits. Dr Kochhar says, “The right skin pH level keeps your skin healthy by enhancing the skin’s barrier function, preventing moisture loss and protecting against irritants. Balanced pH regulates sebum production, reducing oiliness or dryness. It helps reduce acne breakouts by discouraging bacterial growth.”

Optimal pH calms and soothes the skin, reducing sensitivity and irritation. Moreover, it improves skin care products’ efficacy, allowing skincare ingredients to work effectively. By achieving a balanced pH, you can enjoy a healthier complexion, with improved hydration, minimised breakouts, and overall skin resilience, leaving you with a radiant and flawless appearance.

7 tips to balance the pH level of your skin

Let’s have a look at 7 ultimate tips which can help you maintain your skin’s pH balance:

1. Use a gentle cleanser

Opt for mild, pH-balanced cleansers that do not strip away the natural oils and disrupt the skin’s pH balance. Look for products specifically labeled as pH-balanced or formulated for sensitive skin.

2. Avoid hot water

Hot water can be harsh on the skin and disrupt its pH balance. Use lukewarm water instead while washing your face or bathing.

3. Moisturise regularly

Applying a good-quality moisturiser helps to keep your skin hydrated and maintain its pH balance. Look for moisturisers that are non-comedogenic and suitable for your skin type.

While exfoliating can be beneficial for removing dead skin cells, excessive or aggressive exfoliation can disrupt the skin’s pH balance. Choose gentle exfoliants and use them in moderation.

5. Avoid harsh products

Be cautious with products that contain alcohol, strong detergents, or fragrances, as they can irritate the skin and disrupt its pH balance. Opt for milder alternatives instead.
