Britney Spears reveals ‘horrific’ side effects of Botox

Must read

Many women root for Botox as the injections can relax the muscles that give you wrinkles at the outer corner of the eyes or forehead creases. But American pop star Britney Spears is not one of those women. The “Oops!…I Did It Again” hitmaker recently said she will “never again” get Botox done.

Last week, the 41-year-old took to Instagram to share her experience of getting the cosmetic procedure done. She revealed in a video that she first got the procedure in New York City many years ago and then she also tried it in Los Angeles. She said, “Too many times, these so-called ‘best doctors’ do amazing Botox. Never again in Los Angeles.”

The singer told her 42.1 million Instagram followers that for probably 10 to 15 years, she hasn’t had hers done right “and … I can’t even be seen for two weeks (afterward).”

One time, her eye turned black and blue and “way higher than the other”. Also, when she ended up with unexpected swelling, doctors told her to “give it a week or two.” Spears shared, “Sometimes the nerves act that way and have a reverse effect, and I’m like, ‘I look like somebody beat the s**t out of me’”.

She also recalled how the Botox made her forehead swell up, which meant her eyelids “drooped over”.

What is Botox?

Britney Spears’ video must have made many women curious about this procedure. Botox is a brand name for a purified form of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, Dr Vijay Singhal, Unit Head and Senior Consultant – Dermatology, Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi.

It is commonly used in cosmetic procedures to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by paralysing facial muscles. According to a 2020 study published by US National Library of Medicine, it is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in the world, with about three million injections used per year.

Side effects of Botox

Spears clearly shared how the Botox didn’t work for her. So, you should know that there can be possible side effects of Botox. Here are some side effects that you can experience after the procedure.

• Bruising and swelling can occur due to injection trauma.
Headaches may result from the treatment process. Sometimes contracting certain facial muscles too much can give you a headache. Even an error like bumping the forehead’s frontal bone while giving the injection can cause headache.
• Dry eyes can occur if Botox affects tear production.
• Temporary eyelid drooping might occur if the toxin spreads to unintended areas, affecting muscle control, the expert tells Health Shots.

The cosmetic use of Botox is mostly considered safe, but its repeated and long-lasting use may give you a mask-like face.

For a 2005 study published by US National Library of Medicine, researchers observed 45 people over the course of 12 years. The 45 participants regularly got Botox injections. During this time, 20 adverse side effects were noticed in 16 of 45 participants after their initial treatment. Some of the side effects reported were:

• Difficulty in swallowing
• Drooping eyelid
• Neck weakness
• Nausea
• Blurred vision
• Trouble in chewing
• Difficulty in speaking
• Heart palpitations

Not everyone has the same side effects, but it is best to consider factors such as your medical history, allergies medications, and desired outcomes before going for Botox. Also, consult a qualified medical professional, discuss your goals, potential risks and benefits. You must know that the results are temporary, and will require repeat treatments.
