Israeli forces have killed a 16-year-old Palestinian boy in a military attack on the occupied city of Jenin in the northern West Bank. Her Palestinian Ministry of Health identified her as Jana Majdi Zakarneh and announced that she was killed shortly after midnight on Monday.
Zakarneh was shot while standing on the roof of her house, according to local media. The ministry said she was shot in the head. Officials said at least two other Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire during the raid.
Israeli special forces raided Jenin and its refugee camp at around 10 pm on Sunday and made arrests. There have been conflicts with Palestinian youth and clashes between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces. The Israeli military said in a statement that it was “aware of allegations of the killing of a Palestinian woman” and was investigating the matter. Jenin’s local official, Atta Abu Roumeire, announced a general strike in Jenin on Monday in memory of Zakharne. A funeral procession is held for her later in the day.
Zakharneh is one of more than 50 Palestinian children killed by Israel so far this year in the occupied territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza. She is also one of a total of more than 215 Palestinians murdered in 2022, including 17 women. The United Nations says 2022 was the worst year for Palestinians in the West Bank since her 2006. Tensions have been high on the scene during her past year. Israeli military attacks and killings in Palestinian towns and villages occur almost daily, alongside increased Palestinian armed attacks on Palestinians and attacks by settlers. On Thursday, Israeli forces killed four Palestinians, including 15-year-old Dia Rimawi, in raids in Jenin and Ramallah. more than 25 of her died in Israel.
